研究概要 Research Summary

The aim of this lnstitute is to consider the relationship between cities and the arts from multilateral and cross-sectional points of view. Urban problems include a wide variety of elements ranging from science and engineering to humanities, such as civil engineering, architecture, design, art, disaster prevention and philosophy. For that reason, there are numerous interconnected issues which cannot be fully explored simply by studying each individual area in isolation.

In particular here, we would like to consider the fundamental problems for people looking to lead flourishing lives in cities by thinking about cities from the viewpoint of “art”. In the first place, the relationship between the city and art is a subtle one. It is not simple. For example, a beautiful city with beautiful landscape design is not always an easy place for people to live. Furthermore, if many museums are built, people’s hearts will not always be enriched. How did people born in the city once live and what brought those people a rich and happy life? Thinking and researching from the perspectives of the visual image, of history, of literature may offer some insight to the answers to these questions.

As a result of natural disasters, environmental pollution, etc., the circumstances surrounding urban dwellers are somewhat turbulent today. Currently, Tokyo is trying to regenerate with a view to the Olympic Games in 2020, on the one hand, and major earthquakes and terrorism on the other. In this sense, these are now the most realistic and familiar issues. Bearing in mind these immediate, realistic problems, through researching cities from a multifaceted viewpoint with art as the core, while recognizing the realities of urban areas and urban development practice, we are able to investigate what it means to realize an enriching life there. In other words, this is research that connects “things” and ” the mind”, and herein lies the fundamental purpose of this research.

Specifically, we will conduct research constructed around three central pillars: ‘Representation of the City and Spirituality’, ‘Art Work in the City’, ‘Urban Space Design and City Planning’.
(1) Representation of the City and Spirituality
How have the form of the city and the people living there been expressed in art works such as paintings and sculpture? By unraveling the works of art, we ask about questions about the meaning of city life. We will also explore the spiritual expression of the people living there, bringing in a range of historical considerations.

(2) Art Work in the City
Exploring the existence and the significance of art in urban space, we investigate issues such as: What is the meaning of art in cities, such as museums, galleries, and public art? How do design elements in architecture and civil engineering emerge? What kind of artistic value do they have? The aim is to critically explore problems connecting the city and art.

(3) Urban Space Design and City Planning
How should the living space of people in cities be? How should we relate realistic living to aesthetic factors such as convenience, disaster prevention, landscape, or comfort? Here the goal is to consider town planning problems in urban areas from multilateral perspectives including both current practice and history.
In conducting the research, we will maintain interdisciplinarity by constructing the Institute from scholars specializing in fields as diverse as art, literature, philosophy, architecture  and  sociology. Furthermore, by inviting researchers from related fields in Japan and overseas to conduct research activities, we aim to broaden the range of research and improve quality and widely disseminate research activities and outcomes outside the university.

 

都市と美術の関係を多角的・横断的に考察するのが当研究所の目的である。

都市の問題は、土木、建築、デザイン、美術、防災、哲学など、理工学から人文学の分野まで、多様で幅広い要素を含んでいる。そのため、それぞれ個別の領域のなかで研究されるだけでは、とらえきれない領域横断的な課題が少なくない。

ここではとくに、都市について「美術」の視点から考えることで、人びとが都市において豊かに暮らすための根源的問題について考察してみたい。

そもそも都市と美術の関係は微妙で、一筋縄ではいかない。たとえばすばらしく景観デザイン的に美しい街が、人びとにとって暮らしやすいとは限らないだろう。また美術館が多く建ち並べば、人びとの心が豊かになるというわけでもない。かつて、都市に生まれた人びとは、どのように生き、何が、人びとに豊かで幸せな暮らしをもたらしたのだろうか。視覚的イメージや歴史、文学から考察・研究することは、その答えを教えてくれるにちがいない。

自然災害、環境汚染など、都市生活者をとりまく状況は、今日、困難ななかにある。現在、東京は一方では2020年のオリンピックを、他方では大地震やテロまでをも視野に入れつつ、再生が試みられつつある。その意味で本課題は今こそ、もっとも今日的で身近なものとして浮かび上がってくる。こうした差し迫る現実的問題を視野に入れつつ、美術を核に多角的な視点から都市について研究するとは、すなわち、都市における現実の認識や都市づくりの実践と、そこでの豊かな暮らしを実現することにつながる。いいかえれば、それは「もの」と「こころ」をつなげる研究であり、そこに本研究の目的がある。

ここでは具体的に「都市の表象と精神性」、「都市のなかのアート作品」、「都市の空間デザインと街づくり」の３つの大きな柱を設けて研究を行う。

（１） 都市の表象と精神性
都市のかたちとそこに生きる人びとが、絵画や彫刻など美術作品においてどのように表象されてきたのか。作品を紐解くことで、都市生活とは何かを問う。またそこに生きる人びとの精神性の表われについても、歴史的考察も視野に入れて探究する。

（２）都市のなかのアート作品
都市空間における美術の存在とその意義を探る。美術館、ギャラリー、パブリックアートなど、都市のなかで美術はどのような意味を担うのか。また建築や土木におけるデザイン的要素は、何をもたらし、どのような美術的価値があるのか。都市とアートをつなぐ問題について考える。

（３）都市の空間デザインと街づくり
都市において、人びとの生活空間はどのようにあるべきか。利便性、防災、景観、心地よさなど、現実的な生活と美的要素とはどうかかわりあえるのか。都市における街づくりの問題を、実践および歴史など、多角的視点から考える。

以上の研究を行うにあたり、美術、文学、哲学、建築、社会学、の各分野を専門とする研究所員・顧問から研究所を構成することで学際性を保持する。
さらに関係する分野の招聘研究員を国内外から招き研究活動を行うことで、研究の幅を広げ、質の向上を図ると同時に、研究活動や成果について広く学外に発信することを目指す。
